Easy victory for reigning champ Ana

2009 French Open - Day Four

Defending champion Ana Ivanovic breezed past Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn and into the third round of the French Open.

The eighth seed, who has struggled mightily since securing her maiden grand slam title here last year, barely broke sweat as she claimed a 6-1 6-2 victory in 65 minutes.

A win for Tanasugarn would have equalled her best performance at Roland Garros, but she was on the back foot straight away as she struggled to hold her first service game.

And when Ivanovic broke in game four for a 3-1 lead, the Serb was well on top.

The Serb broke again as Tanasugarn struggled to control her serve and claimed the first set with a run of five successive games.

That became six when she broke in the first game of the second set and she appeared poised to brush her Thai opponent aside, before squandering her momentum with a pair of unforced errors to allow her to level at 2-2.

But Ivanovic broke back immediately, before unleashing some punishing returns to establish a two-break cushion.

The 21-year-old then served out to seal a third-round clash with Iveta Benesova.
