Live from Roland Garros (II)

Serena Williams

Enter the gladiators
On Tuesday morning, some of the biggest names in tennis were already beginning to settle back into Roland Garros. Jelena Jankovic was out on Philippe Chatrier court at 9 am, with Serena Williams practising on No1 court at the same time and her sister Venus on court No2. Andy Roddick and Paul-Henri Mathieu had a hit-out on centre court in the afternoon. All eyes were then on Gaël Monfils who warmed up with Marcos Baghdatis. "Sliderman" as the Frenchman is known had his left knee strapped up and was moving cautiously about the court, but he was hitting the ball well and looking like someone who will be ready to play next week!

PHM among the seeds
Despite only being No34 in this week's ATP ranking, Paul-Henri Mathieu will be one of the 32 seeds in the men's singles after the withdrawals of David Nalbandian (hip operation) and Richard Gasquet (suspension). Gilles Simon (No7), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (9) and Gaël Monfils (11) are the other seeded Frenchmen, and they will be hoping to avoid such dangerous floaters in the first round as Croat Ivan Ljubicic, Russia's Mikhaïl Youzhny and another Frenchman Jérémy Chardy who are all on fine form at the moment. In the women's singles, Marion Bartoli (WTA No13), Amélie Mauresmo (16) and Alizé Cornet (21) are the French seeds, while big names such as Virginie Razzano, Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova and Italian Francesca Schiavone will be the names that the seeds look to avoid in the first round.

Davydenko probable but not definite
After pulling out of the last 16 in Madrid, Nikolay Davydenko also withdrew from this week's tournament in Kitzbühel with a leg injury. He should however be fit enough to take part here once the tournament starts, unlike Nalbandian and Carlos Moya who have withdrawn (plus of course Gasquet's suspension). There are also worried looks coming from Gilles Simon's camp, though "Gilou" is suffering mentally as opposed to physically as his recent slump continues. The world No7 lost his second match in as many days at the World Team Championships in Düsseldorf, this time going down to Germany's Rainer Schuettler.

Draw live on rolandgarros.com
On Friday 22 May at 11.30 am at the Club des Loges, the draw for the men's and women's singles tournaments will be carried out, with reigning champions Rafael Nadal and Ana Ivanovic drawing the seeds by hand. The remaining 96 players in each tournament will then be drawn electronically. Follow the draw live on rolandgarros.com as the players' names appear one by one in the two sets of brackets!
