Stroll in the sun for dominant Murray

Andy Murray

Third seed Andy Murray made short work of Juan Ignacio Chela in the warm Parisian sun on Sunday evening, dismissing the challenge of his Argentinean opponent 6-2 6-2 6-1 in just 1 hour 43 minutes.

Murray was in an imperious form, finding his range from all areas of the court to brush aside an increasingly dispirited Chela. The Scot was typically strong on his return of serve, fired down a total of 10 aces and deployed a mature clay-court game throughout.

The world No3 will take great heart from such an impressive display against a clay specialist who reached the quarter-finals here in 2004. Tougher challenges lie ahead, but on this kind of form, he looks a good bet to progress well into the second week.

The result was never in doubt from the moment Murray broke back after losing a tentative opening service game. Chela had began brightly enough, but when the Brit upped his game, slamming winners cross-court and down the line almost at will, the former world No15 was soon left gasping for air. Chela hit some stunning shots of his own, but Murray stifled every attempt at a comeback with a timely ace, a deft volley or a thumping groundstroke.

The Scot now faces the winner of the match between Mischa Zverev of Germany and Italian Potito Starace.
